Grilling Safely: Essential Tips for a Sizzling Summer Season

5/15/2024 (Permalink)

As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, there's no denying that summer is the perfect time for outdoor gatherings and backyard barbecues. However, while firing up the grill can be a highlight of the season, it's essential to prioritize safety to ensure that your summer celebrations don't go up in smoke. At SERVPRO of Salem/Plaistow, we're dedicated to keeping our community safe, which is why we've put together some essential tips for grilling safely this summer.

  1. Location, Location, Location:
    • Choose a well-ventilated area outdoors, away from any structures, overhanging branches, or flammable materials. Keep the grill on a stable surface, away from high-traffic areas and foot traffic.
  2. Preparing the Grill:

    • Before firing up the grill, thoroughly clean it to remove any grease buildup or debris from previous use. Check the propane tank for leaks and ensure that all connections are secure.
  3. Fire Safety:

    • Never leave the grill unattended while it's in use, and always keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill to prevent accidents.
  4. Food Safety:

    • Prevent food-borne illnesses by keeping raw meats separate from cooked foods and using separate utensils and cutting boards. Cook meats to the recommended internal temperature to ensure they're safe to eat.
  5. Proper Handling of Propane:

    • If you're using a propane grill, make sure to store the propane tank upright and in a well-ventilated area. Keep the valve closed when the grill is not in use, and never store propane tanks indoors.
  6. Clean Up:

    • After grilling, allow the grill to cool completely before cleaning it. Dispose of charcoal ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid, away from combustible materials.

By following these simple yet crucial tips, you can enjoy the summer season safely and minimize the risk of grill-related accidents or fires. At SERVPRO of Salem/Plaistow, we understand the importance of staying vigilant when it comes to fire safety, and we're here to support our community every step of the way. If disaster strikes, know that you can count on us to help restore your home or business "Like it never even happened." Have a safe and enjoyable summer!
